Must-Visit Patisseries and Chocolatiers
04 September 2026 · Alexandra Gorsche

Antwerp is not only an international metropolis of fashion and design, but also a true paradise for anyone who loves fine patisserie, artisanal chocolate, and extraordinary sweet treats. Not without reason, Antwerp is also known as Koekenstad, or simply Cookie City. The term “Koekenstad” for Antwerp arose from a long tradition of cookie and chocolate production, as well as the legend of the “Antwerpse Handjes.” But more on that later.
Between historic streets, elegant boutiques, and stylish cafés, a world of indulgence unfolds that goes far beyond classic Belgian pralines. Anyone visiting Antwerp should definitely take the time for a sweet tour of discovery. Our tips guide you to the best addresses for chocolate, pastries, and unforgettable dessert moments.
Lints: Fine Chocolates and Belgian Confectionery
Lints is a traditional establishment renowned for its bread, traditional Belgian Koffiekoeken, pralines, and artfully crafted cakes. The highlight is the traditional Koffiekoeken. A delicious breakfast tip in Belgium, these are buttery pastries made from airy, laminated dough that are a staple in every Belgian bakery. Especially popular are the classic Chocoladekoek with melt-in-the-mouth chocolate, the Crèmekoek with delicate vanilla custard, the Lange Suisse with raisins and pastry cream, and the round raisin swirl. These Belgian
breakfast classics are best enjoyed warm with a cup of coffee—a sweet start to the day that Belgians have loved for generations. A charming detail in Antwerp is the numerous Broodautomaten, or bread vending machines, which offer fresh bread, Koffiekoeken, and fine patisserie around the clock. This allows food lovers to effortlessly get typical Belgian baked goods even late at night or early in the morning.

Neuhaus: Where the Belgian Praline Was Invented
Neuhaus is an absolute must for anyone wanting to experience Belgian chocolate at its source. This is precisely where the story of the praline as we know it today began: in 1912, Jean Neuhaus Jr. invented a chocolate shell with a delicious filling for the first time. Fun fact: Jean Neuhaus was originally an apothecary who coated bitter medicines in chocolate to make them more palatable for his customers. This idea gave birth to the first filled Belgian praline and sparked a global success story. The elegant ballotin gift box, in which pralines are still stylishly packaged today, was also created by Neuhaus. Anyone who truly wants to understand Belgian chocolate shouldn't miss this heritage brand.

The Chocolate Line Antwerp: Chocolate as an Art Form
Anyone passionate about innovative chocolate-making cannot miss The Chocolate Line. Housed in a magnificent city palace on the Meir, the boutique combines historic elegance with avant-garde creativity. Founded by Dominique Persoone and now co-run with his son Julius, The Chocolate Line is among the most exciting chocolate destinations in Europe. Here, pralines are crafted that push beyond traditional boundaries. Fermented tomato, Earl Grey, matcha, or surprising spice pairings show just how versatile chocolate can be.
A special highlight are the imposing chocolate sculptures crafted right on site. Stepping into the boutique, one immediately realizes that chocolate here is not just confectionery, but an expression of imagination, craftsmanship, and culinary vision. TIP: If a trip to Bruges is on the cards, visit The Chocolate Line Factory and try the unique tasting menu at the Julius Chocolate Bar.

Philip’s Biscuits: Antwerp’s Legendary Biscuit Bakery
Philip's Biscuits is an institution. For decades, the bakery has delighted visitors with handmade butter biscuits that impress with their remarkable simplicity and perfect texture. The highlight is the famous almond biscuits, which are delicately crumbly yet intensely aromatic. Antwerpse Handjes are perhaps Antwerp's best-known specialty: small hand-shaped biscuits rooted in an ancient city legend. According to the tale, the Roman soldier Silvius Brabo defeated the giant Druon Antigoon, severed his hand, and threw it into the Scheldt River. This is also said to be the origin of the name Antwerp (“hand werpen” or hand throwing). Inspired by this story, pastry chef Jos Hakker created the Antwerp Handje in 1934 as a tribute to the city. Today, the fine shortbread cookies are considered Antwerp's official biscuit and are a popular souvenir with a story. They are made with particular dedication to tradition at Philip's Biscuits, where they still adhere closely to the original recipe.

Bakkerij Goossens: Belgian Baking Tradition at Its Finest
Bakkerij Goossens is one of the city's oldest and most traditional bakeries. For generations, bread, pastries, and classic Belgian specialties have been crafted here with artisanal precision. Especially popular are the buttery viennoiseries, airy croissants, and delicately made cakes. If you want to experience the authentic side of Antwerp's baking culture, this is the place to go.
A must-try is the legendary Roggeverdommeke. This exceptionally moist rye bread is generously packed with raisins and considered by many to be the best raisin bread in town. The humorous name combines “Rogge” for rye and “verdomme,” translating loosely to a “damn good” bread. It's no wonder that long queues regularly form outside this small bakery, which has been in business since 1884. Visitors to Antwerp should definitely not miss this sweet specialty.

Het Archief Is Antwerp’s Most Stylish Gourmet Hideaway
My personal tip in Antwerp: Het Archief is far more than an award-winning wine bar. Set in a spectacular, heritage-listed cast-iron building from 1851, guests can enjoy wines, Belgian beers, fine pastries, and first-class cheese and charcuterie specialties. The extraordinary interior is an architectural masterpiece, turning every visit into an experience for all the senses.

The Fascinating World of Pierre Marcolini
My personal chocolate tasting tip in Antwerp: at the Maison Pierre Marcolini boutique, it is well worth consciously sampling single-origin cocoas. Depending on their origin, the chocolates develop completely different aromas: from fruity and floral to nutty and intense. As a pioneer of the bean-to-bar movement, Pierre Marcolini processes his cocoa beans himself, impressively demonstrating just how exciting and multifaceted chocolate can be.

Elisabeth Chocolatier: Rum-Filled Pralines with a Real Wow Factor
Pralines with a surprise factor: Elisabeth's Brhum pearls are a true taste sensation! At Elisabeth Chocolatier, I tried the legendary Brhum pearls: crisp Belgian chocolate filled with aged Belgian rum. As soon as the praline melts in your mouth, intense aromas of cocoa, vanilla, and caramel unfold. A sophisticated taste experience that will particularly delight lovers of spirit-infused chocolates. Also well worth trying are the Zwevezeelse Florentines: crispy biscuits topped with caramelized almonds, delicate buttercream, and a coating of white chocolate—a heavenly sweet treat.

Leonidas and the Legendary Manon Praline
Leonidas is a true Belgian icon. Particularly fascinating: the famous Manon praline originated right here. Considered a small revolution in the chocolatier's craft, it is renowned for its delicate shell and creamy filling. It marked the first time white chocolate was used for a praline—a world premiere. Traditionally, it consists of white chocolate, a delicate coffee-flavored buttercream, and a whole hazelnut set on a praline base. Here, every bite holds a piece of sweet history.

Domestic is among Antwerp's most stylish culinary destinations. Founded by Julien and Sophie Burlat, the bakery places an uncompromising focus on French baking traditions, heirloom grains, and high-quality butter.
Crisp baguettes, buttery croissants, airy brioches, and exquisite cakes are created here. A special highlight is the high tea, featuring freshly baked scones, delicate sandwiches, and artful patisserie served on tiered cake stands.
